The introduction of electricity and plumbing marked a pivotal time for urban dental practices. Electric lighting allowed for longer workdays, while fresh water and drains improved sanitation. Being a Jack-of-all-trades remained a necessity well into the 1900s. As metallurgists, chemists, machinists, and artisans, their discoveries led to a surge in innovative dental equipment (which required set-up, maintenance and repairs also done by the dentist).
